Terra, and the fall of Eden
chapter 1 - version 2

John Parks

A tower was built before the times of the simple machine, and it was to reach up to the heavens; the tower of Babel. This tower soared into the clouds like no one had ever seen before. However God knew man’s heart can only hold sin and evil, and that man was beginning to worship himself. God was outraged and destroyed the tower, and cursed every man, woman, and child’s tongue to speak different languages. The workers couldn’t continue and like peoples scattered to the corners of Terra. Then erupted holy wars, and wars for wealth and greed; and from this war humanity began to advanced further and further. Many texts talk of the Tower of Babel, but no one listens to history any more, even though existence is a primordial record skipping over a sample of sound over and over.

No one foresaw that a small, noble project at the turn of the millennia would cripple Terra and its peoples. This project was to build a "Stairway to Heaven" through means of an elevator to a space station in Terra’s orbit. But this humble project was soon crippled at the tides of one of humanities bloodiest and most gruesome wars. Atomic weapons wiped out cultures and countries, while bio-warfare exterminated peoples. Governments changed, and held their citizens hostage for "protection." Soon civil warfare broke out and the citizens began to be targeted as terrorists. Governments began to fall to their knees without their citizens, and from the ashes of the old – Eden was born.

Tribes of people around the world began to unite in technology and common welfare. There was a need for a new government, from the ashes of the old; so representatives from all groups of people and walks of life joined together in harmony. They joined hands in hope of a world they wanted to achieve and they founded it on an image, an image of Eden. Eden did not define a planet, or a government, but a way of life. Terra was destroyed in its wars, the atmosphere crippled, the people scarred, and almost all hope lost. But Eden gave hope to desperate peoples, showing them the possibility for a future they could never grasp before. Eden’s first task was to unite everyone on common grounds, so just like those at the Tower of Babel, they began building the stairway to the heavens, uniting man once again.

After this was done, everything was possible, and humanity began to dream once again. We researched everything, and nothing was to hinder that. This was the glory of humanity, knowledge was the economy, and those in power pushed humanity to its limits. Science and research was a way of life, and things were always getting better. Humanity could control everything, even its own physical nature; and we took evolution of our species into our own hands and played God. Small groups of people began to arise that were better, smarter and stronger than the rest of humanity. They were controlled and quarantined before long because of their nature; we created them, so we believed we could control them.

With the development of terraforming and space travel, we began to plant gardens on other planets, and using the interplanetary transportation network, we were able to transport resources to the sprouting seeds. Separate Eden’s were set up on planets, and moons of our solar system such as Mars, and Ganymede. Mining operations began to transport resources to these new colonies and Eden was in full bloom. Ship yards began to build vessels capable of flight between these colonies, and using gravitational sling-shots gates and ports were set up so that one could travel to these colonies.

Eden finally fell, and God brought the stairways to the heavens back down to Earth. No one knew how it happened but a satellite in Terra’s high orbit collided with a cable of one of the stairways only to bring it crashing to the earth, with this the network began to fall, and fire rained from the heavens onto Eden killing thousands. The single collision caused a cascade effect and debris clouded Terra’s atmosphere, along with chemicals and radiation from everything that was planted in the heavens. Many died immediately from poisoning of some sort or another, and others died slowly either from civil wars that began to plague the once great utopia and radiation poisoning. Few ships could navigate out of the atmosphere of debris but those that did fled to the colonies and gardens. Eden was the hub of all life, and now it was gone.

Without Eden any more, the colonies disbanded from a centralized government and created their own governments. Greed had taken over once again and those still on Terra were left to fend for them selves. The advancements of the human race now are all controlled by corporations, which control the governments of where ever they happen to be, which control trade and the economy.

Currency was reborn, and with currency came a sickening need for material wealth.
