Prizes of Betrayal and Deceit

Jason Kuehner

Many years back there was an interesting story of a young man who had gotten into more trouble than he had bargained for. It all started with a young man who had just graduated from college. His name was John, and he was about six foot two, 200 lbs. His dark piercing eyes gave him an attractive edge that allowed for him to find a job in no time after he graduated. Within about a month he landed this sweet job at an insurance firm in which he was paid according to the sales that he made. Well, John was a very bright student and he had great communication skills, so naturally sales were a great move for his career. His good looks and way with words helped for him to have a great sales pitch which was equally reflected in his first month of starting.

When John started his job there was an incentive for the workers that had a great deal of sales. The top seller of each month was awarded a prize that the company would choose at the beginning of each month. Luckily, the prize of the month was a pair of season tickets to the Kansas City Chiefs football games, which happened to be his favorite football team and they had a terrific year the year before.

John was introduced to the team of his fellow sales representatives and they all got to know each other pretty well. He especially got along with one of the representatives named Anthony. Anthony was about John’s build but he was nine years older. He was a really nice respectable person who didn’t really have a very good last year in sales according to Anthony. Anthony would help John with sales pitches and John was doing terrific in sales, but he couldn’t figure out why Anthony wasn’t doing as well as he was. The company’s policy was that employees start off on their own to see whether they can do a good job and if they want they can have a sales partner in which they split the sales between them.

So John wanted to team up with Anthony because he thought that Anthony deserved a little share of his success because he was so far ahead of the other employees for the tickets that he was sure he would get them. As John and Anthony teamed up they were basically unstoppable and they were tearing up the sales market. The only problem with their sales was that there was three households that they just couldn’t seem to make a sale but they would always reschedule an appointment. These three households were huge accounts that would easily put John over the mark where no one could really catch him for sales, ensuring that he would win the tickets to the Chief’s games. John couldn’t figure out what the problem was, so he asked another employee at the firm, whose name was Paula. She said that his problem was that he wasn’t bringing the proper materials with him. As oddly as it seemed John took her advice and asked about the materials. She said that all he needed to bring was an Iowa Hawkeye folder, an antique watch, and a bottle of water with him in his briefcase.

John and Anthony set off on their first appointment of the day and they came to an old woman’s house. They have been here previously many times before but she had never purchased life insurance from them; it almost seemed like she liked the company but just couldn’t warm up to the salesmen and feel relaxed when purchasing. As John pulled the Hawkeye folder out of his briefcase the woman noticed this and began to warm up to the pair of salesmen and talked on how her son went to the University of Iowa. They talked for around a half hour about the Hawkeyes and Anthony reminded John that they needed to be going to their next appointment soon. The pair wrapped up their sales pitch and the woman purchased insurance from them. John didn’t really think much about it at the time, but Anthony seemed a little impatient and wanted to get going.

The pair arrived at their second home that usually gave them problems with making a sale where a middle aged man lived. The man was in his 40s and he always seemed broken and lonely when they stopped by. When they arrived this time the man noticed the antique watch that John was wearing and started to cry a bit. Turned out that the man’s father had recently passed away and he was also an insurance salesmen who used to have a watch similar to the one John was wearing. The man always bought insurance from his father, which is why he never bought from John and Anthony, but the company recently went under previous to the man’s father’s death. As John made his sales pitch he also talked with the man about his father, giving the man a venting pair of ears that he could let all his emotions out. The man really appreciated this and agreed to buy life insurance from them. As John filled out the papers, Anthony again badgered John to finish up so they could make it to their last appointment of the day. Anthony proceeded to say that he had important plans for that night to meet with his cousin whom he hasn’t seen in a few months. So John wrapped up the paper work and they thanked the man and went off to their third and final appointment of the day.

The final appointment wasn’t real far away from the second and there was a young woman who lived there who was not very healthy. She had a terrible cough which would make her wince in pain after each one. After seeing the woman cough, John remembered that he had brought a water bottle with him and offered it to the woman. She accepted and felt so grateful that she felt the pair of salesmen were very kind and bought a generous package of life insurance. She had admitted that she should have gotten insurance prior to now but her health had just recently taken a turn for the worst.

John was so enthusiastic because he had believed that he had just won the pair of season tickets so he decided to go out and celebrate. He brought Anthony along and said he would pay for everything tonight, so they went out and just got bombed. They were pounding beer after beer at the strip club. He felt like he had just won the lottery and nothing was going to get him off of this sense of accomplishment, or at least he didn’t thing anything could. What he didn’t know was that Anthony was lying to him the whole time. He was really beating John in sales before they had started selling together, so Anthony was just piggy backing on John all the way to victory, and now was drinking his beer and mooching off of him.

The next day at work, which was a Monday, John was waiting for the announcement of who will take the season tickets, and as the boss was about to call out the winner, John started towards the front. "Anthony," the boss called out. John just dropped. He couldn’t believe it so he went to check the figures and realized what Anthony had done to him and just completely chewed him out. John felt like he hit his all time low. He didn’t win the tickets and he had spent $600 the Friday before from buying everyone drinks.

John had become enraged and obsessive in that he told himself he would get those tickets one way or another. When Anthony was getting ready to head to the first game John had followed him. His plan was to follow Anthony and steal his tickets right before the game, because once he was in the stadium then Anthony wouldn’t be able to get to him. So John followed him to his house after work and parked a block away, to not be so suspicious. As John waited outside he saw three cars pull up and three different people get out of the car. The first was the old woman who had a son that graduated from the University of Iowa that they had sold insurance to. The second person was the middle aged man that lost his father who they also sold insurance to. John couldn’t figure out what was going on, he was in shock. The third person to walk out of a car was the last person they sold insurance to, the young woman that has health issues.

It turned out that Paula, who gave the advise was Anthony’s girlfriend who told the pair what to bring on appointments, and the old woman was Anthony’s aunt, the middle aged man was Paula’s father, and the young woman with health problems was Anthony’s sister. Paula and Anthony had a conspiracy going where they felt that John was the only competition so they cut deals with the three people that wouldn’t originally buy insurance and told them that they would be able to attend a game of their choice this football season. They were all meeting at Anthony’s house to divvy up the tickets.

Once John realized what had taken place he barged into Anthony’s house and immediately punched Anthony to the ground. He confronted him in a raging pissed off manor, which frightened the rest of the people in the house, forcing them to flee. John continued to beat Anthony unconscious and grabbed the tickets while proceeding to flee the scene.

John arrived at the game and was having the time of his life. He took his brother who was also a huge chiefs fan and they were on top of the world. They had the full football experience. They tailgated in the morning, showed up early for warm-ups and autographs, and absorbed that football atmosphere. Once the game was coming to a close, the authorities came to their seats and brought the two into custody. Anthony had gone to the police and pressed assault charges against John for beating him unconscious and for theft of the tickets. John’s brother was released but not before John told him the whole story of what happened and his brother, Brian, was sympathetic for him, with revenge in mind. John was convicted and had to serve two years in prison with three years probation.

Anthony now had the tickets and he thought no one was in his way to enjoy the games. Little did he know that John’s brother, Brian, is a part of the gang MS13 out of Chicago. This gang is one of the most deadly in the nation and they had a way of getting back at people. Brian was not a murderer however, so he planned on framing Anthony so he would get what he had coming for doing what he did to John.

Brian had talked with a few head members of the gang and they had recently killed a police officer that was nosing around in business that wasn’t his. They took his body and put articles of Anthony’s close near the body. They ripped a piece of the sleeve off and put it in the officer’s hand. Then they went to Anthony’s home and looked around for anything that could be more evidence. Anthony had a hand gun in his room which was the same as the gun they had used to kill the officer, so they planted it near the body and left some of the shells near the body.

An ironic part of Anthony going to the game was that the officers had come to arrest him just like they had for John. Anthony pleaded not guilty but was convicted and got life without parole.

Two years later John was released and John had informed him of what had taken place. John thanked him and he returned to his normal life as well as work. From then on he had no competition at work and continued to win the incentive prizes living very comfortably.
