The Sleeping Son

Austin Grefe

In a small suburb of New York City lived a business man down on his luck. This old man had once been a very successful jeweler designing for many rich and famous clients. The old man had developed arthritis in his hands and was no longer able to do the very meticulous work and provide a living for him and his family. The old man had 12 sons he loved but no money to feed or cloth them anymore. One day the old man said, "Sons I have tried very hard for a very long time to make ends meet but I can no longer do so. The time has come to take with you the business knowledge I have instilled upon you and go make a living for yourselves."

As the boys were preparing to leave the youngest son James fell asleep at the door. James had been diagnosed with Narcolepsy at a young age and it hindered everything he did. When the olds mans oldest son proclaimed, "Father please do not make us watch over James if we are to be successful. How much work can possibly be done if he is always dozing off?"

"Do not leave your brother behind because even if he is a bother at times, he is still your flesh and blood," stated the father.

Soon James awoke and the boys continued on like nothing had ever happened.

The boys made it to the central part of New York. A few of the oldest boys had only been here once when they were younger so the place was very foreign and strange. It did not seem like a place for such young men. There was the constant honking of cars and the streets were lined with trash waiting to be swept up.

The boys found no work the first day and resorted to sleeping in a train station to stay warm together. When morning came there was the normal hustle and bustle of people swarming to catch a train to work. All of the boys had awoken except one.

"We must leave him here, explained the oldest son again, "he will be nothing but a burden and at such a young age James is sure enough to get into an orphanage with hot food and warm clothes."

So the boys listened to their older brother and not one argued with him. They boarded the train with hopes of finding work somewhere else in the city. Soon after entering a tunnel on the train the lights flickered several times. The train jerked forward and started gaining speed with reckless abandon. As the train approached a turn it derailed killing the boys instantly.

James woke up and went into a state of hysteria when he noticed his brothers were gone. James bolted from the train station and ran down the streets frantically searching for his brothers.

A woman walked out of a side door in an alleyway and collided with James as he was running down they alley.

"I’m so sorry miss I was searching for my brothers after I fell asleep," as James explained his story and of his ailment to the lady.

The lady was taken aback by James politeness in a world she was convinced there was to worthy people left.

"I’ll tell you what," whispered the old lady, "I will cure you of your disease and grant you two wishes because I see some promise in you.

James was amazed but he knew exactly what he wanted. "I want a laptop that has everything anybody has ever known and with all the secrets to life," he exclaimed.

"Well that is one thing, but you have one more with coming your way," said the mystic woman.

"I want a mouse to go with this laptop where I can click on people and move them around just like I can on a computer," said James of his final wish.

As soon as James had finished saying that there was a brilliant flash of light and where the lady had stood was a laptop and a mouse laying side by side.

James was thrilled and didn’t know what to do with himself. He started by opening up his laptop and looking at the billions of folders that were in front of him. James then saw the potential that was before him. James was able to organize the folders into any subject or class he wanted and soon started amassing the knowledge of great minds centuries before him.

The mouse worked amazingly well also. James could pick up anything and move it around with no effort at all. "This is great," yelled James as he picked a cat out of a tree and set it on the ground. James never forgot his father’s words of to use their business knowledge to make a living. James used the new found knowledge to invent several cures for diseases and amassed himself a fortune of kings.

The devil on the other hand had disguised himself as a sexy woman who swindled men out of their money and man times ruined their lives. When the devil learned of James’s fortune she decided it was time to meet up with James.

James went out to eat at a fine restaurant, like many nights, alone. He glanced over at the table next to his and noticed a woman crying. James, being the kind hearted man he is, decided to talk over and console her.

"I’m sorry miss," said James "but I noticed that you were crying and no guy wants to see such a beautiful girl crying."

The truth was indeed the devil had disguised himself as a very voluptuous woman. She had long brown hair that had a very soft shimmering glean to it. Her eyes were also a deep brown that men fell into. She wore a red satin dress that showed off all of her curves and seduced men to throwing money at her even more.

"Oh do not worry about me," whimpered the woman, "I was here to meet a date but I guess I am just not good enough for his time."

"Well as beautiful of a woman as you are, I find it very hard to believe that no man would find you worthy of his time. How about since I can never turn a pretty lady down I will dine with you tonight and it is all on me, order whatever you want."

The devil saw this as her first chance to rob the man of his dignity and ordered the most lavish things off the menu till she was sure he could not pay for it anymore. James was not bothered by this though because his knowledge had made him one of the wealthiest men in the country. As dinner ended they said their goodbyes but James just couldn’t let one thing go.

"What is your name I would love to see you again?"

"My name is Marla Singer and I would love to do this again sometime. It was nice to see what it’s like to be treated by a nice handsome gentleman." And with that she turned away but not before James noticed, as she turned, that there was a small bulge coming out of the back of her dress. James dismissed it as seeing things and so what there was an imperfection in this perfect woman.

Later at home James decided to look up this woman and was disturbed to find out that under Marla’s profile was a number of deeds committed by the devil himself. He continued to read about all of the lives that the devil had ruined using that same scam James found himself in now. James knew he could beat the devil for he knew every move the devil was going to make.

Later the next day James heard his doorbell ring and walked downstairs to answer the door. Sure enough as James had predicted it was Marla. Marla and James sat down on the couch to discuss last nights activities. James was sitting right next to his laptop and mouse.

"Marla, I thought we really had something but you have lied to me and ruined too many people’s lives."

Marla started to reply but it was too late. Before the devil could even squeak out a reply he was flying through the air. James had planned on the devil coming and dragged the devil into his magical laptop.

"Get me out of here! What have you done with me stupid little man?"

"I have done to you what should have been done a long time ago. No more will you ruin people’s lives by enticing them to do your deeds and throw away their lives."

As much as the devil pleaded and cried inside the computer, James just turned the volume to mute. After a little contemplation James decided the best thing to do would to simply hit the delete button. "There you go Marla, You have ruined thousands of lives for your cause an now in turn I end yours!"

Having beaten the devil and invented drugs to cure many diseases James had lived a full life. James was now an old man who had been diagnosed with an illness that he very easily could have cured.

"James you have a visitor", said the nurse on attendance

In walked the old lady who had bestowed upon him his great tools he had used in his life. She had not aged a day since he last saw her but this did not phase him one bit for James had found her after much research and learned she was not as she seemed. This Lady was actually a fairy whose job was to find people with great potential and give them the things they need in life to succeed.

"James I see that you have grown old but I must know why you are on your death bed. You have all the knowledge in the world at your fingertips and surely you can cure yourself. Instead you lay here in this bed waiting for death to come."

"I know all of this but even though I have accomplished more then most men in their lives I know my time has come. I have smashed the laptop and the mouse long ago. I am happy with my life and how it went and now my time has come." James solemnly replied.

Soon after the old woman left James took his last breath.
